Google Duo vs FaceTime

Long Distance relations, Important business call, internal meetings or just looking at the face of a loved one staying far-far away – video calls have been a bane for all the people with internet access. It brings you closer to people and helps in keeping in contact. There are a variety of video calling/conferencing platforms available presently and choosing between them usually seems like a difficult task. However, there is nothing to worry about since we are going to talk about two of the most popular video-chatting apps: Google Duo and FaceTime

Google Duo

Google Duo is popularly known to be the simplest video and audio calling app among all the others. It offers you high-quality video calling and is available both on Android and iOS platforms and is free to use – unlike FaceTime. It has an incredibly simple user interface. To get started:

  • Open the app
  • Agree to Google’s Privacy Policy and Terms of Service
  • Allow notifications from Duo if you wish to
  • Permit it to access the phone’s camera and microphone
  • Verify your number

And you are set to start a video call. Google Duo allows you to add up to 32 participants in a group video call. Starting a video call in Duo is as easy as using your phone to audio call someone.

  • Type in the name of the desired contact in the search bar
  • Select the name from the list
  • Tap on the Video Call icon at the bottom of your screen.

And your video calling will start as soon as the other person picks up the call. One thing you might want to note is that the person you are trying to call will be able to see you while his/her phone rings. To start a group video call, you first have to create a group by tapping on the Create Group button, and then select the contacts from the given list and give the group a name. An icon with the group name will appear at the bottom of your Duo screen. Click on it, and then tap on the blue Start button. It is that simple!

Using Google Duo does not require any manual as the functioning is pretty simple. While you are on a call, the picture-in-picture feature of the app gives you a view of what the other person can see of you. On the screen, you will be able to see four buttons which include a note button, a rotate camera button a low-light mode button, and an end call button. These buttons are self-explanatory, and you can easily use them on your own.

One interesting feature of Google Duo is the option of applying effects and filters while on call. From putting antlers on your head to turning your face into that of an alien’s, you can do it all, in here. This feature also makes the app less formal. Google Duo provides you with an option to video record your calls, and even share them with others. You can also use Google Duo on your PC or laptop.

FaceTime

FaceTime for pc was developed by Apple Inc. exclusively for its users. It operates on iOS 4 and later models and Mac OS X 10.6.6 and higher platforms. It is available in various languages starting from English, Arabic, Danish, French, to Italian, Russian, Spanish, and many more. Despite its popularity, FaceTime has limited availability.

It has an image quality that is superior to all other video calling services. It supports high definition video calls up to 720p on Intel-based Macs.

To start the application, you have to enter your Apple ID, after which things turn simple. The FaceTime application comes with an elegant interface. The picture in picture view enables one to see exactly what the other person in the conversation can see of you. Both the front and rear cameras can be used in the call. It also allows for a swift transition between landscape and portrait views. To make a FaceTime video call on PC:

  • Turn on your FaceTime App.
  • Enter the email address or the phone number of the person you want to call, in the field at the top of the FaceTime window. If the other person’s contact is saved on your device, you can just type in the name of the person.
  • To start the FaceTime call, click on the Video button (for video calling) or the Audio button (for audio calling or even a phone call).

If you want to make a group video call, you must keep repeating the second point, till you have added all your desired contacts. FaceTime allows you to make a group video call with up to 32 participants, just like Google Duo.

Which of these two should you choose?

Google’s Duo is an answer to Apple’s FaceTime for android users. Hence, they have similar features and almost similar interfaces. A major disadvantage of using FaceTime is its unavailability on any platform other than iOS and Mac. In contrast to this, Google Duo can be used by any Android as well as iOS users. Thus, if you are an Android user, Google Duo is your best choice. But if you happen to be an Apple user, you can choose between the two.
